Joel and Melanie have been boating together since their very first date – as young US Naval officers. Their first underway experience was on Joel’s 23’ sailboat on a beautiful September Saturday in Newport, RI. Since then – engagement, marriage, and upscaling to a 30’ sailboat, and then a 42’ ketch. At the Long Beach, CA boat show where they bought their 42 footer, Joel said that the only way to afford it was if we lived aboard. Melanie said, “let’s do it,” and within a few months moved aboard with their 18 month old son. A year and a half later, a day following delivery, their newborn daughter joined the live-aboard family. Joel and Melanie have cruised extensively on their boats; Coastal Atlantic Ocean (Maine to North Carolina), Narragansett Bay, Chesapeake Bay, Lake Huron/Canadian North Channel, Erie Canal (NY), Intracoastal Waterway (ICW), Coastal Pacific Ocean to Santa Catalina Island.
They finally transitioned to power boating due to the shallow North Carolina waters.
Joel and Melanie both served their country on active duty in the US Navy for over 20 years; Joel retiring as Commander, Surface Warfare, and Melanie as Captain, Nurse Corps.
